More Than Enough Fish

Carrabelle--On Saturday, I felt like I had to prove I was a competent fisherman. A trip on Thursday humbled me. On a day that the fishing forecast predicted lots of activity, the bite was slow and the keepers were few and on the smaller side.

Saturday's plan was going to be different beginning with bait. Instead of our usual practice of catching bait offshore, we tried to catch pinfish on the north side of Dog Island. Trying to fill the livewell with pinfish was taking too long, and the pinfish we were catching were small at about 3" in length. We went offshore and caught a bunch of equally small tomtates along with a few other kinds of bait.

With calm seas, I pushed the throttles forward and we ran at speed to depths of 90' and deeper. Eventually after about 3 stops, we had our limit of red grouper or so I thought. We started throwing keeper grouper back in hopes of catching another mangrove snapper. At home, we found that we had 7 grouper, one short of our limit, and 5 mangrove snapper.

We had more than enough fish for the four of us.
