You seem to do a lot of fishing for fresh and saltwater fishies in the area I'm thinking of so I thought I would ask you. If I were to run up Ochlocknee Bay and then start up the river, how far do you have to run before you have a chance at some bass? I know this isn't an exact thing; but, I'm not even sure in the general since.

Once you run past the bridge, it's about two miles before you can get into any Bass. I would really have to show you more than tell ya

It gets better a few miles up "depending on if ya take a left or right" but the way can be interesting for someone that aint run it before

Might have to take you up on that "show me" part sometime. I would like to do a little exploring up that way; but, I ain't interested in exploring right up an oyster bar.

Eerman, Wevans didn't explain that there's more than 1 river. And, there are tons of creeks. There is somevery good fishing in the area. But, I would suggest an aerial photo, or a map of the area. You can get lost down there.

Now you've just peaked my interest more. I've got maps...I've got a GPS...I've got a bluechart. I'm getting to the point where I start to understand how to use it, kind of. I'm also learning that sand bars and oyster bars are a part of life (and probably the best places to fish). I take it slow but going I guess is the only way to learn your way around.

If I recall correctly (I'm sure Wevans will correct me if I'm wrong

), if you follow the channel markers from Mashes Sands, they lead to the mouth of the Sopchoppy River. You can start exploring and fishing right there. I've caught bass and redfish in that area on back to back casts.
From there, there is no limit to fishing possibilities. You can literally spend days roaming the rivers and creeks. My suggestion would be to sneak by Wevans' house and hide a transmitter in his boat. Keep an eye on the forum. When he says he's going to the river, follow him. He knows the area well. And, sometimes, he stumbles on to a fish.
Seriously, it's a beautiful area to explore.

Reds and Trout will be mixed together with the Bass during the winter months

As TC alluded to, the possibilities are endless in the area

once you enter the river system, you don't have to worry about Oyster bars any more

just sandbars, flats that seem to go on forever and trees and logs in the water

I cheat when I plan to enter the less often expolered creeks, I have printed out and laminated much of the center area of this arial so that I can find my way out once I get in

Here's a 'not so great' shot of the Sopchoppy/Ochlocknee area with the Ochlocknee River, being on the left with the island.
And, here's an interesting piece on the Sopchoppy River, which is mostly what you see in the picture.

Wevans, I hope, I'm not giving out too much info on your stomping grounds.

I have not caught one bass out of either of those rivers, or any of the creeks, with your name on it.

Yeah it is. 'Just put that snagging hook on in an idle moment, to get 'What's Her Names' opinion. She said the same thing.
What the heck, add a few feathers and a tail, and something would probably hit it.. My dad use to tie the red strip off the top of cigarette packs on a hook and catch, what he called 'jacks' (chained pickerel).

Question relative to the thread, wevans- Frank at the baitshop across from the Chevron in Carrabelle, mentions shellcrackers being caught on the Ochlocknee at a place called 'Coopers Flats'. That was a couple of years ago in the spring.
Where is Coopers Flats??
