St. Marks, 11/27/04

Me and the NY neighbor hit the LH about 8:00 AM and waited on some water. Tide was pretty low, dead low at 8:24. We were the first boat there and were contemplating a run back to the fort to put in. A fellow arrived with an Aquasport 17 and put in successfully and made the end of the channel, so we followed suit.
It was mostly cloudy, the sun felt real good when it popped out, just not often enough. Water temp was 56. Wind was out of the E(dammit). I should know better.
We began to head to ST. Marks reef. Made it to within .5 mile. Two boats already anchored up there. I decided it was a little rough and did not want to impose. Resigned ourselves to the flats. Wind picked up some. It was one to twos and choppy, no whitecaps though. A little smoother on the flats, but not much.
We stopped 1.5 miles SW of stoney bayou at 0945, dropped the TM, aoutopilited it due E at 1KT. The yankee picked up 1 trout on shrimp, 14- 15/16", released. I threw topwater, many colored jigs, I was denied. All this in 2' to 2.5' of stained water, grassy. We stopped our 'troll' just SSE of the 'bird bar' S of Stoney Bayou. I have always fished the E side of the RG, so this area was a new to me.
We trolled our way back around and up into StoneyAbout 1245 looking for reds. Denied. It starts to sprinkle. The current was rushing into stoney at an incredicble rate. I have a 24V 65 LB thrust MK and I could not make headway to get out of there when we left. Finally dipped the big motor in and putted out. Saw, but did not hit what appeared to be the remnants of a concrete truck that took a dump right in the middle of the mouth of Stoney Bayou about 100' up in the mouth. A motor eater if I ever saw one.
We went back to the east river to the 'long' bar N of the LH channel and set anchor around 1430. Still good water movement. Immediately caught 6 trout, I did not expect that. Figures that all were 14 and 15/16". All but one on shrimp, all released. Starts raining again. We head in and off the water at 1535.
Pretty darn cold in three layers. Very wet. Saw one person on the hill who caught three keeper trout on the bars in the river. Heard some folks were catching reds up the Wakulla.
Reaffirmed once again this this time:
Rocks are in the darnedest places,
If it looks iffy, don't go,
Alway carry a few shrimp,
an anchor is a wonderful thing,
that yankee outfishes me.

I guess I better rephrase that. I wanted to go yesterday, but knew in my condition, she would have gave me an a$$ chewing had me, and the boat been missing when she got home.
