Favorite GPS?

Hey Guys! I've been reading and learning on this site for a while now. I recently had all my tackle and equipment stolen from my car. Just about back up to where I can take a trip and have enough supplies. I'm interesteed in getting another GPS (Mag. Marine stolen). Any suggestions?

Garmin GPSMAP 76 / 76S or 76C / 76CS....I liked the Lowrance Ifinders, but the topgraphy maps for the Lowrance do not show depth (channels, holes, etc) on the maps....Saltwater anyway...They have some great maps for freshwater, but not for saltwater....Garmin is nice

I fish mostly around the Panacea area because my family has a place down there. I'm trying to go broke on a GPS but I know it will help a lot and usually you get what you pay for. I would rather hear from you guys than reading too much online. Was that the map number or model number you were giving me...... I REALLY appreciate the suggestion.

You do not mention if you use a boat. If so ferget the handheld, get a fixed and remove if yea have to.

I am using a Garmin GPS MAP 76S, in the 3 months I've owned it, my GPS has literally saved me (in the fog and night) on more than one ocassion. The map function is nice, but it's not really a necessity. It has all the navigational aids (channel bouys, cans and markers) already plotted in it's memory. For what it's worth, It's the best piece of electronics on my boat.
The only draw-back is the re-drawing of the map takes a second to appear diring navigation. For this reason others might reccomend the straight Garmin GPS 76 without the map. The straight 76 model has almost real-time re-draws of your tracks when you change directions. You could save $100. With the 100 you'd save you could get the Mapsource Software to complement your investment.

I do use a boat down there. Are you cheaper if it is a fixed unit on a boat? I have uses for a handheld but really I'm getting it for the boat.

If your like most of us, $$ is quite limited, a handheld is the only option.

Check out prices here, just look by make, Garmin, etc..But sense you have other uses a handheld, its just the screen to dang small.

The place I posted above has the MAP76 for $189 after rebate
that's less than I paid for my regular 76

I prolly spent too much, but I bought the new Garmin GPSMap 178C Sounder when it first came out. ~$725.00 It absolutely ROCKS, has WAAS, Bluechart. I am still learning the things it will do. I can highly recommend.

For me the handheld is more usable than the fixed....You can use it for trips, hunting, etc....Fixed is only good for the boat, unless you atttach it to your vehicle...If your inshore handheld is more than enough...offshore then a fixed might be better, bigger screen.....
The bluechart maps are worth the investment, topography = natural structure (channels (unmarked), etc....
