I changed my lower unit oil a week ago and here is what it looked like...


Just thought you all would like to see what your lower unit oil should not look like.....

Did you find out where the water was coming in?

Not yet, I'm having the lower unit serviced, so I'll be a land lubber for the next 2-3 weeks... I'll find out them hopefully....

OUCH, that does not look good.

If your lucky it's just a seal...if your not.....$haft is bent...Best of luck to ya..

I took it over to Wavel at Porter Marine. He has a pile of used parts at his shop. I don't anticipate a bent shaft, unless there is something you know about that I don't . Remember, I'm a pretty lucky guy, and hopefully am not in for a jinx Wavel is an excellent mechanic and his prices are very reasonable compared to the competition.

No, but you can bend a shaft with it on the trailer....CSMarine went through the same thing last year, think it was close to a grand to get her out of jail...I hope you asked for an estimate....That pony has alot of hours on it, take the estimate and decide if it warrants a repair or replace..That is if it's a shaft..if you remain lucky, replace the oil and seal and keep on trucking...

I'm sure Wavel will call me with an estimate after he performs his diagnosis. Just to be safe, I'll call him Monday...

Thinking along those lines of cost effectiveness......I have my eye on an 1986' 70 hp Evinrude that has been sitting unused for 4-5 years. The owner used it to ride from Carabelle to Dog Island twice a month for several years. It was kept in dry storage when it was in Carabelle. During a routine tune up the wiring harness plug is corroded and two of the male ends snapped off. I have made my intentions known to the seller, but I am acting disinterested because of the wiring harness issue. Mentioned it to Wavel, and he said he could easily fix it. That's where I am so far with "plan B"...

Picking up the boat today (or tomorrow)- Thanks for all the advice - Wavel said not bent shaft, it was just time for the job to be done.

Does that mean a seal was replaced? If you haven't verified that, I would. There is obviously a reason why your lower unit had that much water intrusion which ain't supposed to be there. If seal wasn't replaced, you've still got a problem somewhere.

Wavel rattled off a laundry list of seals he replaced. It was just "time" for it to be done. He also did a few other things that I can't even remember.....
when I pick it up, I'll get the low down....

I am just relieved to get the boat back in time for the prime of the fishing season

I picked up the boat this afternoon. Wavel changed all the seals, and checked the water pump while he was working on the lower unit. He says I shouldn't need to replace the lower seals again at least for 10 or more years.

Now I'm good to go
