BELLEVILLE - Bundled in her winter coat, 10-year-old Annie Parkinson sat in the seat of a speedboat Saturday and tried to imagine cutting across the waves on a 90-degree summer day.

"We're trying to dream of happier, warmer times," said her father, Wayne Parkinson, of O'Fallon. "But it's hard when it so cold and windy outside."

Unfortunately, the speedboat wasn't tied to a sunbleached dock. It was parked in the Belle Clair Fairgrounds Exposition Hall as part of the 36th annual Belleville Boat and Fishing Show.

The Boat and Fishing show runs through today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults and children 11 and under get in free.

It was 18 degrees Saturday with 30 mph winds that put wind chill at zero. But Carl Vaughn, a salesman for Mount Vernon Mariner, said he didn't mind the brisk temperatures outdoors.

"You wouldn't think people would want to think about boats on a day like this," Vaughn said. "But usually, when it comes to boat shows, the colder it is, the better we do. People just want to do something that's indoors."

Annie said she thought the Caravelle speedboat she was sitting in was pretty neat. But she said she really wanted to work her way to the back of the building where the fishing boats were kept.

"That's what I like," Annie said. "Fishing and to go swimming."

Dozens of boats, some all terrain vehicles and a few campers on display, while all kinds of hunting and fishing supplies were for sale. Visitors were also checking out demonstrations on how to fish, shoot a bow and arrow and fire a gun.

Jim Johnson, of the Federation of Christian Anglers and Sportsmen, loaded orange paintballs into a rifle inside a heavy plastic tent.

"We're a family organization so we try to promote activities that fathers and mothers can do with their kids," Johnson said. "We're out here letting people know what we're all about. Plus we have these activities set up so kids can have some fun while their here."
