I really like the 1/4 oz spec rigs. Two hooks for a dollar, which is good because you'll lose em. Gotcha's are a good choice too. So are fair waters with the gold mylar. All cheap & you can tip them with cut bait if they're there & following but don't strike. Macs can be extremely finicky about having a search image for a certain bait size and avoiding everything else. When that target is a 1/2 inch glass minnow it's tough to mimic.
But, my favorite mac lure is a Chug Bug on Dog Island shoal. Awesome!
Watching a 5 lb spanish blow up a topwater and strip line off ultra light gear is primal.

Just joined this forum. I've got 20 years of fishing for mackerel on Dog Island reef. The best thing to catch mackerel is a Captain Action. Use a #3 in the spring and a #5 in the summer and fall. I make my leaders 3 1/2 to 4ft with 50 to 80lb mono. After supper is caught, Drifting near baitfish you can use jigs or just about anything.

I have only been catching Spanish for about 3 years, but one lure that just seems to kill them for me is the KastMaster spoon. You can throw one as far as you can throw anything and when you match the hatch with the right size, the Spanish just can't leave it alone.
Oh, I really don't use the Kastmaster, I buy Cabellas knock off.

Captain Actions are a brand of banana spoon. You can find them at Kevin, Crums in Panacea and sometimes at the BP at the bridge. Come April they can be hard to find because the stores sellout.
