Ft Gaines 3-11-05

Went to Ft Gaines Friday. Had a catastrophe at the ramp at Patula Creek. The ramp is very steep and only 9 feet wide...has curbs on both sides. I backed my boat and trailer down the ramp until the boat was just in the lake. Turned it over to my partner to back me completely into the lake. The van jumped the curb and my van came to rest on it's axel with the left rear wheel hanging in space. We we stuck. Closest wrecker was in Cuthbert or Albany...45-50 miles away. Disaster.
Boat came in off the lake and the lone fisherman went to get the phone number of the wrecker. He came back with 2 more guys..who after looking the sitution over...said...I think a 4 wheel drive pickup truck might do it. They went and got the truck...hooked a log chain to the van....and ....wallah...it came right on out. The truck pulled me...scrapeing..up the ramp. I was the most relieved guy in Georgia.
It was about 1 o'clock by then and we decided to give it a try in all the wind on the lake. It was gusting to 25-30 mph...steady at about 20. The lake was white capping. We went up the creek to get out of the wind...and the water in the creek was much too cold....almost 48 degrees. Had been 53 out in the lake.
Didn't get a bite. Few boats we talked to had only 2-5 fish. Nothing showed up on the sonar up the creek.
Stopped by Capt Franks on the way home and had a seafood feast. Highlite of the day.
