After every trip soot from the exhaust covers the transom of the boat. This stuff won't wash off with soap and water. I've been using 3M wax and cleaner. It takes it off but it's a job. Any one have a better way?

Try lysol toilet bowl cleaner. Works well on rust stains, should do the same on soot.

Automaotive stores sell a product called Purple Stuff- Super Clean, several other names (all seems to be the same). Best degreaser I've ever found. Be careful though if used full strength, I've had it take off cheap paint and start to dissolve some gel coat on my battery boxes (left on too long AND full strength). Other than that wash off hands pretty quick, seems to want to remove your fingerprints. I use on oil line on my transom and never had a problem.
