I'm eager for a Softshell Crab Po'Boy!
Has anyone been pulling up softshells yet? Does anyone who's caught them before know a good spot (I've only got one trap)? The season's not till May, but I'm curious if they're molting early this year.
Thanks!

If you have a crab trap and can catch a few you can have soft shell crabs. They shed from now till winter. You must seperate them, and keep them in the watert. When you see the crab becoming a greenish color they are called busters. And shed in few days. Get them as soon as they do because in less than a day they begin to harden.

Males will kill soft males, and males hold on to soft females. Either they are breeding or he just likes to hold soft lady crabs.

If you want to hunt them wading, with a scoop net, look in old cans, conch shells, or hidden in the grass, anyehere they can hide. Look for the discarded shells that they have recently walked out of, that's a good sign.

Fry up some and call me over.

Thanks Capn Charlie,

The only crabbing ive done is when surf fishing on the Atlantic side. A crab would grab you bait and hold on . Some time you could land him if he ,or she, would hold on long enough. Some folks would take them home to boil?? I suppose. I was after blues and not crabs.

I do like stuff crab on the seafood buffets if that counts :o

haha, will do captain. Thanks for the advice. I used to crab tide pools at Cape San Blas with nothing but a net, chicken wings, and string a few years ago. As for the trap, I'm just going to drop it where I see the others with a little beef liver in it. Do it the easy way ;-)
One more thing, If I catch a few busters, should I keep them alive in some water till the next day so they shed, or through them back?
