Lanark Report 5/14

Well, I'll start with a little griping. NOAA's marine forecasting ability is once again the pits. 1-2' foot my rear end. :smt013 It was rough, rough, rough. Before 10:00 a.m., it was 2-3 chop on top of swells that were so big boats disappeared on the other side.

O.K., got that out of my system.

We put the boat in at Lanark about 6:15, already the lot was pretty filled up. One gomer with a Leon tag was loading his boat at the end of the lot, and nearly blocking everyone else from putting their boat in. What a dummy!

Wind was 10-15 out of the south, bay was real choppy. Slowly motored to Dog Island Reef and trolled and drifted the reef for a couple of hours, hoping it would calm down. Breakers on the reef, even. Caught 8 bluefish, two macks, and blue runners.

Decided to pound out to a close in spot, four miles outside the reef. Made it there, and we caught many shorts and one nice red grouper. To one more hole where we caught a nice gag and one more red grouper. Decided to come on in to beat the crowd. Saw some bait pods in about 45', getting hammered by dolphins. Trolled, but no bites.

By noon, the wind had nearly died out, but it was still pretty rough. The swells stayed, the chop dropped to a couple of feet. Some of those swells were 6-8', or more when they doubled up.

We enjoyed ourselves.
