I'm looking for a good way to ID saltwater fish that I will see (hope to see) around Florida, especially since there are some pretty particular regulations on related species. Can someone recommend a good chart I would keep on the boat? Thanks.

For quick reference I use a small laminated chart (3"x6") which has color pictures and the Florida regulations for size and number (as of 2002). I have two - one I got at Kevin's Sporting Goods and the other at the Shell Island Fish Camp in St. Marks. I have another laminated one which is by Tightlines Publications. It is their Back Country and Flats Fish Chart #10. That one is 8 1/2x11". But for really detailed descriptions I use the book Sport Fish of the Gulf of Mexico by Vic Dunaway and published by Florida Sportsman.

If you can get one of the "Fishing Lines" books that the FWC puts out, it will have all the info you need.

Actually you can download it online..

Thanks for the info, sailfish and Tom. I will try the on-line one for now since I have access to a good color printer (and it's FREE  )

Go to the bookstore and pick up
"Sportfish of the Gulf of Mexico"

Don't leave home without it. Far better than the laminated charts.
