radio question

Ever since I've had my boat, I've noticed I don't get very good reception on the VHF. I can pick up the Marinas; but, rarely hear much boater traffic. The radio was new. Installed when I bought the boat. Has always worked this way. The antenna is an old one that was already on the boat. Is this likely an antenna problem or something else??

What radio, and what antenna do you have?
I learned the hard way that antennas don't last forever, and a quality antenna is very important. If the radio is new, I would think you have an antenna problem.

Its highly likely its the antenna.

ICOM IC-M302 basically new.
Antenna was with the boat and I don't think there is any manufacturing label on it so I don't know what it is. I figure it's the antenna; but, I wanted to make sure there wasn't something bonehead I was overlooking.

Check all of your connections. Make sure the coupler on the antenna cable is clean and grounding.
