Aucilla River Report - 12/27/2001

Got to the Aucilla at 6:45 this morning. Not much water in the river at all on the -0.4 tide. Was the 4th boat in the water went back down to the same area as yesterday and the trout were schooling like bass and busting on top. Caught 10 keeper fish in 30 minutes. I hooked several fish per cast when one would pull off another would hit it. Tons of fun using a Chrome & Blue Redfin.

Nearly everyone in the river was catching trout as we made our way back up to the landing.

The big buzz going on at the ramp was the apparent 10 pound trout caught yesterday. I think JR's has pictures of it. Would have like to have seen that fish.

Fish cleaned, boat unloaded, at work at 9:45. Not Bad!:D

Did you take the Key West?? or were you in a smaller boat?

I was in my 12 foot john boat. Not enough water to put the key west in.

Man, I gotta try the river, sounds like the time is right. How deep are the holes you usually fish during winter?

Its not so much fishing in the holes right now. The fish are close to deep water but are schooling up around the shallower boulders in the river. The edges of the drop offs seem to be the key.

Rumour is though that he didn't actually "catch" that fish in a conventional manner.

I do assume that the "conventional manner" in which you speak is due to the fact that he was fishing for red fish when he hooked the trout.

There is really no "story" around the fish, only rumors.

If you think about it, look at the source of the rumors. The people spreading the rumors are the same ones that ALWAYS catch their limit EVERY time they go out, and every fish is 19" - 20".

Thanks Tom, I thought they were, but they looked a bit "small".
Please understand I am not casting aspersions, its just that the only other dead ones I have seen (2) were considerably bigger.
What is the size limit?
