Here’s a brief summary of our week we spent in Key Largo in the Florida Keys for our annual Family/Lobster Get Together (July 24-31). By design, this trip coincides with the two day Florida Mini Lobster Season; a special two day season always held a few days before the commercial lobstermen deploy their lobster traps. We dragged our 24-foot Boston Whaler, the Bare Necessities, down as our platform for snorkeling and diving for bugs.
Sunday: Travel day from Gainesville (400 miles and 7 hours on the road)
Monday and Tuesday: General relaxing, gear organizing, dock fishing (snappers & cudas for the kids), yellowtail fishing on the outside reef, and patch reef fishing for lanes and mangrove snappers. The Tuesday afternoon pre-lobster scouting trip was shortened by afternoon storms. The brief scout of a few spots indicated that there were not a lot of bugs on our spots.
Wednesday (Mini opener): We went straight to a spot we call “No Brainerâ€
