Scallop Report. Steinhatchee 9-10 05

The scallops were there, you just had to hunt them up. They did not seem as abundant as a few weeks past so rather than grapping a handful in one breath we had to find them individually (not complaining). Getting two or three at a time was not uncommon. We were surprised at how cool the water was in 3 feet, 78.4 degrees F. My young kids didn’t stay in the water too long. I could feel 6 yr old Casey shivering in the water after about 15 minutes. Gotta be good for the flats fishing however. As expected the scallops were quite large for this time of the year. Where we scalloped some of the scallops were heavily encrusted with epiphytes (barnacles, sponges, slipper shells, etc). Some were so fouled that the meat (abductor muscle) was very reduced in size. It must be energetically costly to filter feed and detrimental to their health when they have so much fouling on their shell.
I was surprised at the lack of scalloping activity on this last day of the season. The Sea Hag Marina was almost devoid of activity-no problem parking. The public boat ramp was not busy at all either. Once on the water there were a few boats out but not as I would have expected.
Pulled the kids on a bit on the water toy and just enjoyed our final scallop hunt. It’s very satisfying to see my kids catch their own scallops. Awesome day on the water and a great end to a fun season.
Now it’s shrimping time……..
