Yesterday morning, (9/30) We got an early start from Shell Island…The river mouth and flats were almost like glass…Didn’t see a single boat the ride down the river or on the flats..
Headed straight to the numbers that had been productive a couple weeks ago and started trolling….Grass was pretty bad in places and it was probably 9 before we hooked up with a gag…First one was a keeper..One thing that helped some with the grass was using a very big coastlock snap swivel and big swivel on about four ft of leader….Several times reeled up to find grass hung on the snap and swivel and the plug clean….Not every time but enough to know that it helped..
Strikes were slow at times but we wound up putting about 15 in the boat the whole day…Four were keepers..We covered several miles of numbers during the day !
Water stayed calm and didn’t see hardly any other boats..Fished as deep as 28’…Water temp stayed around 82 degrees..
This morning was a different story all together ! Got out as far as red number six buoy and knew it was time to stay inside ! wind was whistling! Fished the east flats on and off till about 2:30 and started in…Caught a few short trout and that was it…Tried two more times to go outside when the water calmed down but never got past the stakeline before turning back..Altogether wasn’t much to it today !
