Sunday at Lanark

Post by EddieJoe »

Me and buddy Fritz eased the Ghost Rider into the basin at about 7:30. Wind was light, temp 60, water temp 75. Headed out to first spot in 45' off Dog Island, into a head sea of about 2' chop, on top of good sized swells out of the south.
Not too bad heading into the swells, as long as I kept the speed to about 15mph. First stop no keepers, and decided that if we went slow it would be O.K. to go deeper. Went to a spot farther out, where we caught 3 nice gags and a red. The bite slowed, and we decided to head in about 12:30. The seas had not laid down much, but it was fun surfing in.

Only annoying part of the day was after anchoring offshore a really nice (maybe 26 foot) Boston Whaler walkaround circled my boat, when I was at anchor, about 75 feet from us. The guy appeared to mark my number. Then, the boat circled around and around us at anchor within a quarter of a mile, and then they anchored about 75 yds away and fished. I don't know why people need to do that, given a big gulf out there and lots of water. This was over natural bottom, not an artificial reef. I figured he would go over to my spot as soon as I left.

Of course this is not illegal, but it gives me a pain. I thought about speaking to him but decided that anyone that would do what he did wouldn't take kindly to me pointing out he was a jerk, so I just left. Sometimes these guys are armed.

Regards,

EJ

I know what you mean. I had a boat circle us yesterday offshore. When they're close enough to be able to read their boat name, something is wrong. :smt013

nice report EJ......I was out Lanark on Friday with Tom Keels and a friend of his and we did quite well with the grouper for the 2nd week in a row. We took all of our fish in 65-70 ft. using LY's, squid and a speargun! I agree with you about other boats coming up on you when you are anchored on a spot. The gulf is way big enough to not have to do this.....it's not illegal, just courteous. We went to pull up on a spot the other day and there was another boat fishing within .1 of a mile from my mark. Instead of just anchoring up and fishing anyway, I just decided to move on to another spot and waved to the other boat as we passed. We already had a nice cooler of gags so there was no need interfere with someone else trying to do the same. Glad to hear you at least caught a few nice fish.....there are definately plenty of them out of Lanark right now.

I have had bad experiences with Jerks also. If I see another person within .1 of a mile then I go to the next number.

Was there much grass on the surface S. of DI?
