Nissan / Tohatsu 4-stroke - opinions?

I haven't had much luck finding a used small outboard :smt012 , and I need to get an auxillary motor for my 20 ft. open water boat as I don't feel like paddlin' 15 miles if my Merc I/O breaks down.

A 6hp long-shaft 4-stroke at 55 lbs. seems to fit my needs, but the Mercury's are about $1600+ not incl. shipping or sales tax. I can get a Nissan/Tohatsu for about $1200 with free shipping. Nissan and Tohatsu seem to be the same motor except for the label.

Any thoughts on dependability and quality of one of these Nissan/Tohatsu outboards used in salt water would be appreciated.

Most of the Oyster boats in Apalachacola and Eastpoint run Tohatsu 2 strokes, that tells me that they have to be tuff motors :-D but I don't have any personal experiance with them

I HAVE A FRIEND THAT HAS A TOHATSU THAT IS USED WEEKLY, IT IS A SMALL MOTOR, I BELIVE 25 HP BUT NOT SURE RUNS GREAT AND HARDLY USES ANY FUEL, IT IS A TWO STROKE. THE ENGINE HE HAS IS ABOUT 10-12 YRS. OLD. HE HAS IT ON A LOWES 14' AND IT PUSHES IT RIGHT ALONG, PROBLY 20-25 MPH.,

They are fine motors. You might want to find out if there is a dealer/service center near you. The only problem would be parts availability and service.

Thanks guys - sounds like youall feel Tohatsu makes decent motors. And if I have :smt010 to shell out for a new one, that's what I will get.

We have a 3 month old Nissan 30hp 4 stroke.
Its smooth and quiet- We love it.

Haven't had it long enough to know about the durability.
