After some arm twisting DWilliams invited me, Pimpmassa and Recon aboard his 24 ft Cape Horn for a much needed spearing trip. The air temp was 24 degrees as we loaded up the boat at Jerry's and left for the ramp at 7.
Nice less than one foot seas greeted us as we left the river. Dwayne and I were pretty confident in our numbers SE of 24 since neither of us had fished that way all year. Needless to say it was very disheartening what we found.
Nearly all the spots we checked (over 20) showed no relief and very little to no fish show. Finally we found one number in 50 feet that showed a little something and decided to get wet.
I was first to the bottom and quickly shot a sheephead. This vis was great. Probably 35 feet or better. As I scouted the ledge, all I found minus the occasional 12 inch red grouper was sheephead. Dwayne came in behind me and got a 24" gag. That was it for the ledge.
We moved to another area close by and proceeded to dive one of the neatest dives I have ever dove. As I hit the bottom I shot a 25" gag that I didn't stone and stirred up the bottom pretty good. As I strung the fish up I noticed a much bigger grouper easing down the ledge. I eased in behind him and he ducked under the ledge. I went in looking for him and he eased his head out and silloutted against the light from a hole behind him. I lined up the shot and he never twitched as I pulled the trigger. I got a nice picture of him back on board. 32" nearly 16 pounds.
Unfortunately more of the same the rest of the day. Good looking spots with no fish on them. We ended the day with 5 gags and 3 sheephead. Beautiful dives, just not much to show for it.

How bout the sheepies? Did you get a picture of the Sheepie?
I would have loved to see him. What was the water temp at
the depth you found the sheepies & Groupas? Were the sheepies
in a small school? or was the big boy just a lone bull sheepie?

Did not get a picture of the sheeps. All three we got were around 5-6 pounds. Water temp was 62 on the bottom. Sheeps were schooled ingroups of 6-8. Not a whole lot of them on any spot which is unusual.
