We'll be vacationing on Cape San Blas the week of March 18 with my twelve year old son who is a fishing nut. His primary experience is on central Florida golf course ponds.

He has a nice spinning as well a baitcasting outs. We'll be staying on the beach and also have a canoe.

All I have been recommended at this point is Berkely Gulp Shrimp in new penny and molting.

I would appreciate any suggestion for where to look to get started.

RMSCS, Don't be dismayed by the lack of response yet - everyone else is fishing! There are several folks on here that will point you right... after they clean thier catches for today so just check back after dark.
In the meanwhile, do some searches on PSJ and you'll find something of use.

Launching the canoe will be no problem for fishing the bay, you can launch at the state park and fish the grass flats around that area. You can also launch at the state public kayak and canoe launch, which is located one mile down from the Scallop Cove BP. As far as artifical baits are concerned, you will get many responses from this forum. My favorites are the DOA rootbeer gold glitter, nite glow, and new penny color grubs
from DOA. I fish them either on the bottom slowly bouncing them, or under a cajun thunder. This is a beautiful area and I hope you enjoy it.

The canoe sounds great, and the bay at San Blas is just right for it. There's a picnic and access area near the end of the state park where you might want to launch. It's shallow for a long way out, but a canoe should get you out to grass flats and dropoffs pretty quickly.

If you like surf fishing, the beach side is decent around the parking area and pavilion about halfway down the road in the state park. There's also a road that veers off to the left to the beach at the old lighthouse and Air Force station/barracks. It's about a mile from the park entrance if I remember right. If nothing else, it's a lesson in what hurricanes do. The barracks that are about to fall in the water were about 50 yards inland not long ago.

As for lures, I'm more of a live/fresh bait guy. But I think DOAs or the grubs others mentioned would work. If the pompano or Spanish are running on the beach, you might try a pompano jig, spoon or Gotcha plug.

Just got back from Cape San Blas. I didn't see many fish caught, but the wind and waves were up this weekend. My boys caught some catfish in the surf, but we didn't get into a boat. A lot of folks fish the bay with kayaks and canoes, just be careful and watch the wind.
