I got a Garmin 172 coming...Understand the company is dropping this model but looks like it will do everything I need it to do....
Question is : What, other than the a/c pc adaptor, 16 mb data chip, and the Blue Chart Americas one region certificate do I need to order to be able to download, edit info to the gps unit ??
I would be SO appreciative of some advice from some of you that are familiar with this unit ...

Sounds like you have all you need. You will have to go online to Garmin and register your unit, then open your blue chart and download to your unit. If you have any problem you can call Garmin tech line while you do it and they will walk you thru. Good Luck.

I have the 172C. You've listed everything you need.
Buy the 64mb chip for $25 more. But you don't really need it. I have the entire gulf region, from south of Tampa to west of Lafitte, La. loaded in mine. The entire region takes a little over 9 megs. The only other information that stores on the chip is your waypoints and tracks. They don't take enough space to worry about.
I would be surprised if they do away with the 172. It has 4 times the processer speed of any of their other compact units. It updates transparrantly. It's like fluid movement across the screen. Virtually no lag time. You'll love it.
