Hi, I'm somewhat new to fishing here in the tallahassee area. I'm a student at FSU, and just started fishing the aucilla river about half a year ago.

I've tried most of the southern part of the river from the boat ramp to the mouth, and have yet to catch a keeper red. I'm not asking for anyones GPS coordinates or anything(although that would be nice ) just some general ideal of where the larger red fish are.

So far the best spot I've found is by that island close to the 'west cut'

any help is greatly, greatly appreciated.

What Tin Can said. And then there are creeks one after another starting there and working west.

thanks guys, I'll try the west cut out this weekend and let you know. Is there any bait that works better than just live shrimp on a leader?

Spoons, spinnerbaits, jigs and jerkbaits...everybody's got their favorites.

It's hard to beat a Johnson Silver Minnow, but use a gold one (the name notwithstanding). During the colder months, I'll switch to a jig on a leadhead fished real slow. You can go east or west from the mouth of the Aucilla and find creeks and shoreline that hold redfish. If you want to anchor and soak bait, I think fresh cut mullet is about as good as it gets for the reds.

redfish jim, or anyone who knows, when I fish the spoon what am I looking for? Do I want to be in shallow grass filled water? Near rocks? The creeks themselves or the mouths of the creeks?

..but it has to be a negative low tide and there has to be LOTS of fog or none of the fish will bite - welcome aboard

Creek mouths, rocks, oyster bars...

LOOK FOR ROCKY POINTS OR SHELL BOTTOM. SEVERAL YEARS BACK WE HAD A SPOT IN THE WEST PASS THAT DID FAIRLY WELL WITH THE REDS. I DONT FISH THAT AREA ANY MORE DUE TO THE SNEAKY ROCKS THAT ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO ATTACK MY BOAT.

GO THROUGH THE WEST WEST PASS AT THE END OF THE PASS TAKE A LEFT AT THE ISLAND FOLLOW THE EAST SIDE UP TO ALMOST THE END (OR THE MOUTH). THERE IS A LONG OYSTER BAR THAT RUNS EAST - WEST. FISH THE TROUGH BETWEEN THE GRASS LINE AND THE EAST SIDE OF THE OYSTER BAR. ABOUT A 100 YARDS TO THE WEST OF THE OYSTER BAR IS CHANNEL YOU MAY HAVE TO USE YOUR DEPTH FINDER TO FIND IT. THE CHANNEL IS VERY GOOD FOR TROUT DURING LOW TIDE.

THESE TWO SPOTS GET FIVE STARS FOR FISHING, AND NOT DIDLY FOR BOAT FRIENDLY.

crocker thanks for the spots, I'll try them out this weekend. Luckily for spots like these, my boat is just a little 12' v haul that doesn't draft much water.
