Back from ST. George

Thanks to those that suggested St. George Island. My wife, and four year old daughter really enjoyed the beach. We left there yesterday and my four year old did not want to leave. Sorry to say I did not catch any fish, but I did have a good time. The wind got up Saturday and it made the fishing tough in the Bay. Went Sunday and the wind was tough, but not as bad as Saturday. The people I talked to were not doing much either. However when I left there must have been fifty boats in a small area just east of the ST. George bridge along the power line. I assume they must of been catching something there. To bad I had to leave. On my way out I think I found the type of boat I am going to buy. It was a 21ft Maveric with a 200 vmax at Carrabelle Marina, I loved the fishing space on this boat. I now know what Steve was talking about when he mentioned tabs. The guy at the Marina said the Maveric is top of the line, what do you guys think.

Glad ya enjoyed yourself, Tennessee.
I would put Maverick in the same class with Ranger. Hughes, Maverick, and Pathfinder are all the same company. Maverick is their high end line.

That is pretty consistant with what I was told by Mr. Schaffer. What I really liked about this boat I don't think I will be giving up any fishability when I Bass fish out of it here in Tennessee. The boat has a lot more fishing space than my Ranger wich is only about three inches shorter. The other thing I like about it is the idea of just taking a brush and water hose to the inside of the boat when cleaning, also this boat looks like it will hold up to aging a lot better than a typical bass boat. But in all, I will have to sell the Ranger first, to bad I can't have both. Tin did you do any fishing over the weekend?

Glad you had a good time. No downside to the Maverick's if you can swing the price, they are great boats. You will miss the speed of the bassboat.
I fished Friday and caught a mess of short trout (30-40). Only 5 that would keep though. The wind picked up severely Friday afternoon as well.

Castaway I have a 2003 Ranger 520 VX, dual consoul, pretty much loaded. Lots of White, blue trim, with blue custom trailer. I am going to ask $28,000 for it. They are listed from about $27,000 to 31k in the boat trader. Steve glad you caught some trout, I don't think I was holding my mouth right or something this weekend. Steve, the mechanic at the marina said the boat will run about 60mph. If that is true I won't give up much, my Ranger will run about 68.

Did the boats look like wooden skiffs with a little cabin? They probably were local boys tonging for oysters, rather than anglers. That is a favorite area to gather oysters.
Luck,

Someone needs to show you that picture of the fella who got thrown from his fast bass boat into a fence post...no sir...I don't feel too much need for that kinda speed from a fishing boat, but to each their own

Well Mudducker, I know what picture you are talking about. I think it is just like everything else, a little coomon sence will go a long way. However, I have only had my boat at that speed maybe two times. I the main river channel I usually run about 50. I have friends that make their living fishing tournaments, now those are some guys you don't want to get in the boat with.

I didn't mean to sound preachy and I sure understand about using good common sense. I also understand all too well that there are uncharted objects on just about every body of water. I was running up the main channel of the suwannee river years ago at less than 30 mph and bumped over a large submerged log (none showing above water). It danged near threw me out of the boat. Be sure to wear your kill switch and have fun

Mud, you'll probably think I'm crazy, but I would rather hit something at 60 than 30. I also have a bass boat. Mine has hit 72 on a GPS. If I'm running 30, the lower unit is deep in the water, along with a lot of the bottom of the boat. If I'm running 60, there ain't much in the water to hit something.
I've also seen the picture you referred to. Accidents happen. No argument there. But most of the injuries resulting from fast boats are usually a result of the driver being stupid. IE Why was the guy in the picture running through an area where he would be impailed on a fence post?
There are lots of fast boats out there. You hear of very few accidents. The boats are desighed to run that fast. Some of the operators are idiots.

I agree that operator error causes a lot of problems. I can also see that less in the water could sometimes be an advantage. However, I'll give you the name and number of a guy up in fitzgerald georgia. He'll tell you why faster is not better. Water doesn't compress. He's the fellow who was driving the speed boat that they used to show on the ABC wild world of sports crashing. Broke nearly every bone in his body.
Remember guys, this is just my opinion. I'm not condemning anyone. I just would hate to see anyone get hurt, including me
