LANARK 4-21-06

Left the house bright and early and 4:30 AM to head to Lanark for a day of inshore fishing for pompano and spanish around Dog Island and St. George. A buddy was staying down there all week and told me the pompano were running between the islands. Sounded like fun to me, so we planned to make a day of it. We got to Lanark at 6:00 AM and the conditions were quite ideal.......slight wind & smooth bay.
We decided that offshore would be a good possibility to start the day, so we picked up a box of LY's and squid.
We headed out towards the east end of DI and it looked great for a change with the wind and seas not beating us to death! So, off to a snapper hole in 75 ft. We were fishing 30 minutes later and started landing snapper one after another only throwing back 2 shorts.

The run out......

sunrise......

We caught a few short gags, then managed a few keepers.....

The bite slowed down around noon, so we decided to head in towards St. George and troll for a bit. We put out a red/white Stretch 30 with no takers. So, off towards St. George to look for the pompano. We got to the Island and anchored out in the surf where there were a few other boats. We threw Nylures looking for pompano, but only managed spanish on every 3rd cast it seemed. After losing 4 Nylures to the bigger spanish, we decided to move on down the Island and take a swim.
We ran over near the sunken shrimp boat off DI, but still couldn't find any pompano. After an hour or so, we decided to head back to Lanark. On the way, we found a huge school of ladyfish busting a big school of baitfish. We shut down the boat and started throwing jigs at them. We got imeediate hook-ups one after another and had a blast for the next 20 minutes. Exhausted and hot, we headed back in to Lanark.
It was a great day on the water and sure beat work
