My tip is don't. The plastic navy will be out in force between blue and the headwaters. If you go much further down, and aren't really familiar with the area, you are likely to be victimized by one of the many rather large rocks. You would have much better luck on a weekday.

You will have a blast with those expectations... There are 1million stumpnockers and a lot of small bass.
Cricket or worm and you will see the fish rushing to bite your bait.

Go ultralight and fish spinners or small rapalas for the bass.

There will also be 1million people having fun and playing around. Great people watching!

go on down the river to Cedar island before you start fishing. First island you get to that you can pass on either side. If you can get live crawfish you can site fish for the red eye's. ought to be illegal :-D if you can't get any fish a soft plastic black and orange crawfish bait, spray it with Bang craw scent attractant and you will have fun catching the red eye bass. there are some big LM in the river as well. I have never bream fished the river. take your time going up and down the river, don't get in a hurry and you won't hit any rocks. If you have a long shaft go even slower. Lots of places where you can get off of the main river. really pretty places. Good luck.

Oh yah, expect to see the GW.

I've never fished that far up the river, but farther down river I've had good luck with any color beetlespin for bream and spinnerbaits for bass.

Are there any shoal bass in the Wacissa or are they strictly north (Flint) and west (Chipola)?

Are the red-eye bass similar in size and fight?

Still learning these sweet water species.

I will be paddling a canoe and don't expect to go very far past big blue.

I often hang there during the heat of the summer, only fished it once a little with crickets. Many 3 finger brim.

I have never been able to completely ID the subspecies... they are all close.
But I always thought the ones in the Wacissa were Suwannee bass...
I can tell you fish from that river are delicious!

Thanks Barry. Appreciate the info. But how do you derive the taste from catch and release?

I might have to give the Wacissa another try. Haven't been there in years, but Splinter should do just fine.

Yes, they are Suwannee bass and are very good eating. I call them red eye because their red eye stands out so good when you see them. A 2#er fights like a 4-5# LM.

How bad does the grass get below big blue? I have never been down that far. I have put my 18' boat in to go to the spring, and wondering if I could idle it farther down ?

The main river channel is open, just idle down and you will be good. if the river is low look for rocks.
