St. Joe Bay 5/9-5/11

Post by CairoTrout »

My goal for the first two days was to find fish for my 8 year old son for the Kids Win Fishing Tournament that was being held on Saturday. The fishing on the bay was the best I have ever seen. We caught everything Thursday and Friday. Well Friday I noticed a small craft warning for Saturday so My dad and I sat down and come up with plan B. He is a really good flounder fisherman so we decided to hit the Gulf Canal that runs into the intercoastal. We fished hard from 7 to 11 with a few nice flounder and trout. We found some structure in the middle of the canal and we tried it and man did it pay off. Red after red after red my son landed a 26.5" 6.2 pound red. I knew he would place in the tournament so off we went to the weigh in and left the hot bite. It sure was hard to leave because all of the reds were over slot or upper slot. The red was good enough to take second place out of over 300 kids. I sure was a proud Dad and my son couldn't have been happier. The picture says it all.

It was good seeing you guys. Glad your boy had a good time. Sorry about your gear getting jacked at the weigh in though. I wish I could have caught them doing it.

Fishing with your son and your dad is priceless. Make sure you slow down and drink in the moment. It seems like time goes by in the blink of an eye........but the memory of a day like you had stays with you forever.
