Decent anchor selection?

Is there anywhere in Tallahassee with a decent anchor selection? Need one for a new flats boat and would prefer to pick it up and have it before heading down this weekend.

Other than West Marine or Bass Pro I don't know of a local source with a large selection of anchors. AMS in Panacea probably has some.

West Marine. I use the G7 Guardian Fluke (Fortress) for my 18" bay boat. Its aluminum and very light weight but holds well. Never had any issues anchoring with it any where from St. Marks to the Keys. It works well for me. I doesn't require much chain either further keeping the weight down.

I had one of the Guardians on the ActionCraft and it worked fine with a short length of chain. It was too light to hold the heavier Bayshore, however, so I went with the SeaClaw. Don't even need a chain with it.

Shields Marina in St. Marks has a very good selection of Danforth anchors and they may have some of the Guardians (can't remember). 925-6158 and prompt #1 for the Ship's Store.

I've read and heard the same. May end up going that route, I just wince at the thought of spending nearly $200 on a piece of metal that sits in the hold or on the bottom.

What boat did you get? My Bayshore is heavy (1,200+ pounds) with higher freeboard and the 12# Sea Claw holds just fine. I did have it modified since I didn't plan on using the pin release and had a SS bolt welded in. Bought mine years ago and still going strong, but depending on your model a galvanized Danforth should do the trick. If it's a smaller skiff, the Lewmar plow style anchors hold really well too, but they pull up big clumps of grass when they do come loose, so they're not the most environmentally-friendly.

Nice choice. Classic skiff. The 12# Sea Claw will be way more than enough if you decide to go that route. A Guardian with chain will also work and it's a lot lighter, cheaper and quieter too.

Enjoy the boat! Just stay out of JT's holes.
