Re: Another year and another project....

Hey, Chalk-- it's looking good. I'm hoping to sail Slider over to Cedar Key for the small boat meet in May. If you're done by then, zoom out and show me how to catch a few fish while I'm plodding past your neck of the woods.

Re: fishing under sail

Folks, just a quick note to let you know I put up a blog for Slider
last night:

http://slidercat.com/blog/wordpress/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's only a couple of entries so far, but I'd appreciate any
criticism or suggestions. The second entry recounts a potential ...

Re: fishing under sail

Hey, Chalk, that's a very interesting link. I've thought about building a lightweight cat for cartopping, out of foam panels. It would be mostly a one-person boat, but it would get you to the fishing hole a lot faster than a kayak. Anyway, I was thinking about vacuum bagging the panels flat on a ...

Re: fishing under sail

I didn't want to bring that old post up.

Hey, I thought about building Slider for years before I got started. On total elapsed time, Chalk hasn't lost that part of the race yet, I'd guess.

Re: fishing under sail

Thanks, Chalk. That looks like a pretty slick boat. What are you going to build it out of?

Re: fishing under sail

Tom was kind enough to fix my picture-posting problem, so here's a pic of Slider:

And here's one of my daughter with a deathgrip on a ladyfish:

Re: fishing under sail

Thanks Charles.

I guess our ancestors all fished from sailboats. If gas keeps going up, we all might need to learn some new skills. It takes a little patience to get to the spot at 5 knots instead of 30, but I don't spend any money on fuel. My auxiliary power is a couple of paddles, which has its ...

Re: fishing under sail

Thanks!

You can take down the sails and drift, but you can also pull a maneuver called "heaving to" which in this case doesn't involve involuntary chumming. Long story short, you back the jib and put the helm down, and the boat just sits there, making a little ground to windward.

I'd put up a ...

Re: fishing under sail

Folks, just a quick note to let you know that I finished my boat for fishing under sail (among other things.) We've had it in the water now for about 3 months, and we've enjoyed the dickens out of it.

If you go to the site and look in the photos section, there's a snapshot of my daughter ...

Re: fishing under sail

Hey-- just to let everyone know I haven't given up the whole fishing under sail thing, I'm making progress. The boat is on a trailer, mostly painted, and maybe I have another month or two of work before launching.

I went out on Choctawhatchee Bay Monday in my little sailing dinghy to troll up some Spanish. Bad idea.

The fishermen in the flats boats and pontoon party boats don't bother me much, as long as they're on plane I can handle the wakes. It's the 50' sportfishermen on their way across the bay to the ...

It's true that they're better if you bleed them. I like to make a cut through the bottom of the gills-- that way you don't spoil any meat. I also cut out the blood line while filleting them.

Bluefish on the bay 5/20

This is a little out of the area but if you like bluefish and live anywhere near Choctawhatchee Bay (Destin), now's a good time to get a fish dinner. I imagine the same thing is going on in bays to the east.

I was out Saturday in my little 11' sailing dinghy, taking my wife for a sunset sail ...

We cut them up and use them for shark bait and crab trap bait  Never tried to clean and eat any ,maybe we have been missing something :lick:

I guess that remains to be seen, but I found some recipes here:
