Turkey point / marine lab area?

Post by ab7bear »

Anyone caught fish recently arount the marine lab and turkey point? I went Tuesday and caught about 60 trout. Wedneday we only caught about 5 trout? I'm kinda new to the inshore fishing and could use some suggestions and help.

Being between the Ocklochnee & the Carrabelle Rivers the conditions fluctuate a lot. Your report reflects that. The flats in terms of total area is much more limited than the endless flats east of the Ocklochnee. I also think the lab area is under a lot of fishing pressure due to more "offshore" boats out of Lanark also fishing the limited inshore flats they have access to between the marina & offshore.
Just my 2 cents...

Of the 60 trout we caught only 8 were keepers and 2 made 20". Go back the next day and only catch about 5 trout... even though we fished longer than the day before. i guess that reflects the flucutation, a lot. I have pinpointed any consistent spots east of the oklocknee since i haven't fished there much... just passing by headed offshore most of the time. iguess i'll just have to fish and explore more in this area. that's why it's called fihing not catching.

Still, 60 fish this time of the year is great! This is just the beginning of the season for trout to move back out onto the flats. They will be inconsistent over the next 2 weeks, assuming the weather stays warm and then for a stretch they will be everywhere feeding up for the spawn. Then they will get scattered again. Just remember...any day spent phishing beats a day spent werking :-D

We fished there Saturday, my report is in the reports section, we did not catch a lot of trout but of the six we caught, four were keepers, and all between 17 -19". The bite was slow and I will add that while cleaning them we found one with three large shrimp in its belly.

We started fishing before sunrise, the fish pretty much quit by 10am, that's when we left and went to find sheepies.

Yeah, I kind of guessed that, we missed the only water movement that day as it rose up in the morning and then stayed up. Probably should have went to Dog Island Reef and hunted down some spanish macks, but it was only the second time in our new to us boat and we were breaking it in getting to know it.
