Wknd Econfina Report

Got down to the big econ this weekend for my b-day and the first salt trip of the year, and it was a great b-day and first trip. we hammered the reds catching 55 in the 3 days. The trout bite was pretty slow. we had 19 keepers for the weekend and probably caught or lost around 35-40.

Friday we got down around 11:30 a.m. and got a good day of fishing in staying til dark. we had 21 reds and 9 trout. very slow on the trout and the reds were just on fire. we couldn't believe we had that many reds in a day. 3 years ago i would have told you you were crazy if you would have said you could catch that many in a day down there. the population has just exploded in the last two years.

Saturday we took our time getting out. we started on the trout as we usually do and it was just really slow. we then went in shallow and i poled around and sight fished for about 2 hours where i caught this little guy (i know, the pic looks funny with that big pole between my legs, but you guys will just have to laugh). he was sitting on a bar about 20 feet away and i threw a gulp to him and he gulped it. not a huge fish, but it is sure fun to sight fish them.

we then went down to another spot for some more trout and again it was slow. so we went back shallow for reds and man they were there. we had two keepers in 15 minutes and proceeded to catch 25 in the next couple of hours. it was a ton of fun. then we had a great econfina sunset.

sunday we started early. went to a spot where i always catch good trout when it is tuff. they weren't there either. went to the next spot where i can always catch some good trout but not a place you can sit and catch a bunch real quick. we ended up with a limit and the smallest one was 17.5 inches. biggest was 22.5 inches. (will post a pic tonight of the big trout). it was one of the biggest limits of trout i have ever caught, but it took 5.5 hours to get them (hardest i have ever worked for a limit of trout). we also lost 8 or 9 just as big. we then went shallow for about an 1 hour and a half of redfish before we had to get back to watkinsville. we had 9 and they were still eating when we had to leave. but we weren't complaining. we were tired, sore and satisfied with our weekend.

so another great trip to the coast. weather was amazing with crystal clear blue skies each day and 85 degrees.

Man O man what a trip. You sure did slay them fishies. Great photos.

Good job Volguy :thumbup: Appreciate the report and the pictures. Sounds like you found them pretty consistently. You mentioned that you moved in to some shallow water on the last day after catching some trout. How deep were you fishing for the trout? The wife and I had a very small window on Saturday afternoon between 1:30 and 4... not the best time but was the only time available. We caught 5 shorts and one keeper in the first 45 min or so then we lost the bite and never found it again during 3 or 4 moves. Fished 4 ft to 2.5 mostly. A bit windy and rocky. My wife caught most of them on a CT and I caught mine on a catch jr 2000 suspended.
"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".

we were cathing them in 4 feet of water on popping corks and topwater. we caught them for a little while early, then the tide slacked for about an hour and the wind layed. nothing as always. as soon as the tide picked up, the wind followed out of the south (had been out of the east) and the fish started biting again.

Great report. Weekends like that is what makes life worth living. Seeing your from Athens has me craving Harry Bissetts. I'd do some sinful things for a "Carpetbaggers Fillet" right now.
