Any opinions on ETECs?

Post by Redbelly »

Comparing an Etec to a Yammy? Hp to Hp?

I want to maybe power-up, and want to not add weight. I have a 40 hp Yammy 4 stoke now, and want to go to a 60 hp.

Like mine so far. Haven't had it long enough to talk about durability.

Saltwater approved. Haven't had it that long but so far so good on my little engine. nice low end torque, very little lagtime if any when I hammer down on it from a dead stop. What size are you looking at? I think Seatrout99 has a 115 or larger

I'd like a 60 on the Scandy White, but not sure about adding another 54+ lbs on the rearend. I could figure out where to put the gas tank and batteries up front I suppose.

Hey Redbelly,

My etec is a little bigger than you are wanting. I have had mine a little over a year. No problems. Love the engine. Quiet and smooth running.

It's a legit concern; especially when the purpose of you boat is to get skinny. I sacrificed some HP to get a better draft on mine.

Well....the yammy is back at the boat doctor, there is still something causing a gas problem, won't stay cranked at idle.

I may try out the 4 blade prop and forget about more top end speed. 8)

I have the 90 ETEC and I love mine. I have 100+ hours on it and have only had the idle speed adjusted because of the large 4 blade prop I'm turning and a couple software upgrades. The 90 pushes my 21 Carolina Skiff DLX mid 30s fairly heavily loaded but it still floats shallow.

I have also owned a 90 Yamaha. Loved it also. It was bullet-proof. I put 200 hours on my Yamaha on a Key West 1720 and only had one issue. A tilt/trim seal started leaking and Yamaha replaced it under warranty.

I think the ETEC is alot better on gas/oil consumption, and it definitely quieter. You can also get some nice warranty offers on the ETEC. Mine is under warranty to 2012. I wouldn't hesitate to buy either again.

Was your Yammy a 2 stroke or 4 stroke?
