Lighthouse 4/6

Post by Just Fish »

I arrived at my fishing buddy's house at 8am and we decided that the wind was not to bad so lets go to the lighthouse. We arrive about 8:30am and I step out of the truck and HOLY CRAP!!! I about called the Red Cross to say that hurricane season had started early.
We figure its gonna be rough so we head out around the back side of the long bar nice and slow(its almost low tide) and find that the waves really aren't that bad. So we get out on the east flats and start to drift(quickly heading toward Cuba thanks to the brisk north wind).
We quickly realize that the eel grass has not really started to grow very much and that trout are no where to be found. My buddy looks at me for a plan. I say well the waves aren't bad so lets head out to the first stake and see we can find some spanish. So we get out around 6-7ft of water and start a drift again. He decided to tie on a gold gator spoon and we start to see spanish following it to the boat.
Over the next few hours we pick up a few spanish here and there and some blues, slow fishing but enough action to keep us out on the water. I side hooked a 8in lizzard fish and my buddy says drop him behind a cork. About 10 min later I have a huge trout on only to find that when I get him to the boat he only has 7 in of the lizzard fish down is throat and with a good shake of his head I am left with nothing but lizzard fish head. About that time the skipjack (I call them ladyfish) start hitting his gold spoon. He brings one in the boat and says give me a knife we can use some cut bait from this for the spanish I will show you how. Well for the next 15 min we search the entire boat for a knife and neither of us have one. So toss that nasty ladyfish back in the water and get back to casting the gold spoons.
So about 3pm we decide to head in to the oyster bars between coon bottom bar and the folly bar to see if we can add a redfish to our catch. First cast a huge mackrel about 6 ft from the boat steals my buddy's gold spoon. He ties on another and picks up a pup red. About that time a nice 20in spanish hits my Gulp. My buddy decides hes tired of the gold spoon ties on a Gulp and catches a nice 19in trout in the oyster bars to finish out the day.

Catch of the day...
5 spanish 15-20in
3 trout, one 19in keeper
1 pup red
2 14in blues
numberous ladyfish in the 20in range.

Water temp 68 early - 71 afternoon
Bait - gold spoons, gulps, DOA under a CT.
Area - East flats 4-8ft water, patchy sand bottom and grass patches
oysterbars between coon bottom bar and folly bar just north of east river.

Get the Net!!

  WTG in all that cold wind. Spanish are real thick this year, but I don't ever recall trout biting lizardfish. Tried them several times and got no hits. Will try them again, might get lucky.

As you can see below, not much freeboard. But the waves really weren't that bad. And I was out there the same day the boats capsized, it was nasty, this was much better. The difference was the tide I think.
