Can anyone suggest a fair and honest boat mechanic. My boat motor is leaking gear oil from the foot of the motor.Don't know if its a seal or bearings gone bad or both.Any suggestions would be apperciated.
Back on Jan 17th, I took my boat to Waviel Porter in Woodville. We talked about several items that needed attention of which the most urgent was a bent prop shaft. He looked at it and said "I can straighten it... it'l cost you too much for a new one." He made a list of the things we agreed on and I left it with him. When he was done, the shaft ran straight and true. I picked up the boat, paid him the agreed upon price and came back to Tallahassee. When I got home I realized that there was one item that hadn't been addressed. My trim motor had been showing signs of corrosion and Mr. Porter had suggested cleaning it and then coating it with an asphaltic product. I called him on the phone and he said, I forgot all about that. I checked the invoice and it had also been left off of it. Mr. Porter told me to bring it back and he'd take care of it which I did. He did the additional work that we had "verbally" agreed on. I picked up the boat and went on my way with no additional charge. That's about as close as you can get to a Fair/Honest Boat Mechanic (imo)
"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".
Mr. Porter is the man......I heard the same rumor about him not liking Mercs also, but he worked on mine without hesitation and she runs like a charm...even for being a 1975 Merc 850....runs like a new one
