Keaton Scallops Report 7/11/2003

Post by dbplug »

Went to Keaton for the first time on Friday. Thanks pops and coolrow for the tips earlier.

Scallops were there but scattered in 4-5' of Dekle. About 40 other boats out there. Ran to piney point to look as well, but did not find any there. Got chased off the water at about 10:15 due to multiple water spouts. Waited about an hour and spent the rest of the afternoon on the water.

Water was very clear and calm. Had 4 kids in the boat, 3 of whom(10 year old, 12 year old, 15 year old) had never scalloped or snorkeled before. They had an absolute blast!!! I would move the boat up 200 feet, cut the motor, and the anchor splash was IMMEDIATELY followed by four other splashes as the kids jumped in, great stuff!

In the things I learned this trip category:

If the weather turns foul at keaton, do not wait to get back to the landing. The canal is very long and a no wake zone.

Some people will stop and look at multiple water spouts a mile away - do they forget that one may be forming over their head? kinda dumb.

The nearest payphone to keaton is in perry, 17 miles away. Cellphones don't work(Sprint).

Dont' count on keeping anything dry when you have 4 kids scalloping.

Kids are funny and a lot of fun. Nothing like getting them away from the everyday media barrage and showing them how fantastic nature can be.

I really love the look of 36 blue eyes in front of 2 blues eyes in a mask.

You can never have enough water to drink.

A Bimini top ROCKS!

The folks at keaton are great people, give them their due.
