St. Joe 05/05/07

Post by Chalk »

Man after a week in Miami, Honolulu and Charleston, I was ready for some fishing action. My lil buddy (Tincan) prefished for us on Friday telling me stories of 25" trout and mass quantities of redfish, I was ready for a relaxing day on the gulf, in a tournament :o

I arrive at the ramp to see that Tincan had won the race to the ramp and had the front parking spot. :-D . I load my stuff in to the boat, borrow some ice from Birddog and talked to Bay Gator before the mass of boats exit the basin.

We sped across the bay in the early morning light, coming off plane to a wonderful dance of mullet and near slick water. We start the day off chunking topwaters with alot of short strikes, we land a few trout and some redfish.

Spent the most part of the day in the back of the bay, fishing here and there...Looking for some good fish, never really found any good fish, like there was a few weeks back.

We were fishing along some spotty bottom and I saw the first of many masses of redfish....I see the school first from my perch and fire down range as I alert Tincan  ...I hook up...Tincan hooks up....I see a nice rod and reel at my feet   ....I stick my hooked rod between my legs, pick up the other rod and fire it into the melee and hook up :o :smt007 ...I now I have two redfish on and only two hands....As by design Tincan loses his fish and I being the partner that I am, give him a rod with a fish to reel in

If you want to catch a redfish, I would say you need to goto St. Joe, we saw many, many, many schools of redfish...We also saw alot of big sharks, so you potential scallopers beware

We ran across one of the many schools of redfish and I fired into the sea of red...Hooked up, landed the fish and to my surprise the 26 7/8" redfish had 5 spots, so we threw it into the livewell...It was good enough to win us the most spots side bet with Birddog.

I cracked myself up with Tincan after lunch....I tied on a clown colored jerk bait, Tincan says, "What is that?" I say, "It's a clown, you know everybody loves a clown." I fire the lure down range and get a bite...I tell Tincan,"See, I told you everyone loves a clown, you know it's true, everyone likes you." :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 I laughed for a few minutes over that one.

All in all it was a great day, we caught some trout, redfish and had alot fun, can't wait til next time (maybe tomorrow 8) )...Thanks for the ride Tincan, had a blast

That was a real nice red Chalk... All we could find were doubles...even caught one red twice :o

Rest of the story: Chalk let the big red go at the end of the day....about 6 folks ran over with nets hoping it would float back up one more time

Tough trout finding but fun tourney. And the reds...they were real and they were spectacular

It's always an adventure when fishing with Chalk. :-D As usual, partner, it was a blast.

I pre fished Friday. All I can say is Friday was a much better day for trout. :-? Capt. Fred, owner of Presnells, commented Saturday, after the tournament, the trout fishing is always tough when the water is as high as it was.

We had 16 boats participate in the tournament. The competition was fierce. The top weights were close. It was a heck of a tournament. Thanks to all who participated.
