The Coast Guard requires a Captain's License for all operators of for-hire vessels. In order to purchase a charter captain's license, you must have a Captain's license. You can call 1-800-982-9374 for information on the Coast Guard Captain's license. This documentation will be required in order to obtain a state vessel license.

You have to pass the "six pac" test to obtain you license....you can goto school at http://seaschool.com/
In 1999, these were the requirements.
*Nine continuous days of class starting on a Saturday and ending on the next Sunday. Sat. Sun. 8am till 6am. Mon. through Fri. 6pm till 10pm, then Sat. Sun. again from 8am till 6pm. Test the following Saturday.
* Test has four parts. Navigation using a chart, must score over 70%. Decking 70%. Boating 70%. then there is "Rules of the Road" and you must score 90%, and this was the hardest part for me.
*Also must complete a first aid course, a CPR course. and get a full physical including a color blind test.
*Fill out form showing number of hours you have spent on the water.
Its been a while but this is close to the requirements.
