Pretty Good Weekend

Post by FindingNemo »

Two "big days" Friday and Sunday. Friday was grouper fishing with several friends offshore on my buddy's Parker. The grouper and AJs did not cooperate but I managed to bring what appeared to be about a 6 foot bullshark to the boat. We did not invite him in. The guys estimated over 100 pounds. No filets to share but it was 30 minutes of runs and reeling. To be honest that fish whooped up on me.

Sunday, Mother's Day with the wife. She caught 2 nice keeper trout and we kept catching unusually large pinfish. I commented that one of those big pinfish might pull a cobia off the birdrack or along the stake line. After a half hour of pinfish stealing our shrimp, my wife said "let's go get your cobia." We went to a likely spot and my wife idled us within casting distance of some of the only structure in Apalachee Bay. After three casts a cobia snatched the pinfish right off the hook. So I threw a bigger pinfish out. The very next cast the cobia came back out and nailed it. About 20 minutes, 2 jumps and several drag screaming runs later, I boated my first keeper cobia at 53 inches and 44 pounds. My lucky hat (Christmas gift from my daughter) fell off during the tussle but I found it for next time.

The fishing gods were definitely smiling on me this weekend. The funny thing is I caught each fish on a brand new rod and reel -- they were the first fish on each rig.

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and the line at the boat ramp gets longer.
