Oddly enough, noone of my family in Kentucky fished until my Dad and I took it up in the mid-1960s. Dad caught, and released, the largest bass of his life at Lake Jackson in 1990 while visiting us here. http://home.comcast.net/~olebiker/BassDad.jpg
Now that's the size you want to release back to the water but up to around 4 pounds, they get filleted and released into some grease

If you kill your breeding stock, you aren't going to have any bass. If you want to keep some bass to eat, keep some of the smaller ones. The pictures that surprised me were of people keeping and eating their breeding stock.
I released a half dozen bass or so this evening, but fresh water fish are dirty and are merely a diversion for me until I can get back to the coast. Salt water fish dont always get a reprieve.
I don't keep any bass over 15 inches - they just don't taste good to me above that. And even then, I'll only keep a couple a month. I fish Lake Hall and I think there are too many small ones there - about 1 out of 14 bass I catch there is above 17 inches. I'd like to see a slot limit there where anything 15" - 24" had to be released.
I do catch and release of all the bass I catch in the Suwannee River - I sometimes catch those rare red-eyed "Suwannee Bass" too, which of course I release as they are on the "Species of special concern" list.
In this river, Bass fishin' is for sportin' fun as they are not the best tasting fresh water fish IMHO, so I go after red-belly perch and catfish for food fishin' !
