Welcome, OT...looks like you really know how to "stir the pot", eh? Terms like "PETA", "Internet Detective", "Catch & Release" - you missed some key phrases like: "Kill Your Catch" & "Selective Harvest"! See, this is why we live in America = "Home of the Brave and Land of the Free(dom) of Speech", right!

For me, the reason I joined this merry bunch of fisher-peoples (including the NFGFC) is because of the diversity in teaching and learning techniques available to make for better fishing and to pass these learned traits on to other generations &/or those that are less fortunate than those of us with boats, money, & the time to go fishing!

I say: Keep a few fish to eat and return the rest, carefully, so that they may survive for others to enjoy catching, releasing, or eating in the future of fishing!

I RECENTLY HAD A CONVERSATION WITHA FELLA THAT WAS TOLD BY A BIOLIGIST (OR SOMETHING) THAT WORKS ON FISH PONDS. THAT BASS OVER 4LBS DO NOT PRODUCE. THEY GO THROUGH THE MOTIONS BUT BECAUSE OF A PARASITE COMMON TO THE SOUTHEAST THE EGGS WILL NOT HATCH OR SHE JUST WANT HAVE THEM. SO HE ADVISE EVERYONE TO TAKE THE LARGEST ONES AND THE SMALLEST ONES.

I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS.

This thread makes me wonder ... "What species of fish fish do North American hatcheries produce the most of?" My guess would be that (freshwater) trout would top the list as most of the western states as well as many of the northern states and Canada would breed large numbers for stocking. But I would also guess that bass are second. After all - bass fishing MUST be a several billion dollar industry when you count up all of the incidentals. Not sure if smallies are bred very much, but largemouths are bred in huge numbers both for private ponds and public access fishing.

This of course is from the department of useless statistics .. has no real bearing on the question of harvesting bass (or any other fish). But that inspires another ... "I wonder how many of the bigmouths produced in hatcheries are hybrids anyway .. in which case they are not breeding stock and might look awfully good in the smoker?"

It indicates that stocking bass in Florida has not been all that successful,
"Survival of hatchery-reared bass stocked into wild populations has been poor."

I saw it a bit differently, but I admit I'm a bit of a dumbo at times. Seems to me that stocking increases the overall population and increases the chances for anglers to catch a few. I like sitting in the boat and downing a twelve pack as much as the next guy, but I prefer to be interrupted by fish. I like catchin' 'em. They're fun. My brother fishes for Muskies on the Ontario / New York border. He and his club go strictly catch and release .. perhaps due in part to the fact that Muskies taste like a million small bones, but they argue against keeping even a 50 pound trophy to gather dust on the den wall .. they C&R becuse there is no stocking program nor management program on either side of the border. The only hope for a fish a day and the only hope for breeding is to put 'em back. If there was an increase in the population, and an increase in the catch rate, then they might relax a bit an their vigilance for C&R.

Its all a matter of what we see when we read, I suppose.

I read Olebiker's first post and thought it was an interesting question, diplomatically worded and not at all agressive.
Yet he got both barrels from a few people.

It has always surprised me that there are not slot sizes and bag limits, for freshwater fish in the US.
Especially as they all appear to be edible.
