St. Andrews - 06/08/07 “My Redfish cherry was poppedâ€

Post by Chalk »

After cutting the grass Thursday evening, I spent the rest of the evening tying up some flies that I was going to try out Sunday with Barhopr. The whole time I’m tying them I wanted to run out the door and try them, that moment in the dark, I didn’t but I wanted too.

I woke up Friday morning and got ready for my day at the rock pile…got to work noticed the wind was not blowing…checked NOAA…5-10 knots….Hmmmm…By 10:00 I was out the door and heading to the house to get the Ghostrider.

Slide the boat into the bay and headed west…NOAA’s forecast was right I guess it was blowing at least 10 knots maybe more  .

I pull up to a bank and get the trolling motor down, move the cooler to the bow, get my stripping basket, fly rod and climb up on my perch. I start casting to work out my normal bugs and to get use to the wind. Ended up having to side cast cause the wind was blowing so hard, but I was determined to stick with it today, come hell or high water I was gonna try a fly at a redfish.

It didn’t take long for me to see the familiar reddish tone sliding across the bottom…I made a cast and the fish followed the fly…I was about to wet my pants…fish turned off…dam I love this stuff.

It wasn’t long before I see another fish and had the same turn off, no interest…so I try a white and pink version of the same fly (DJ’s Lil Red Surprise by Capt. Dave Sutton)…I find another fish and the same thing happens…Hmmmm…Dig into the fly box and find a #6 toad with a craft fur tail, that I had tied up…let’s try it on the bottom.

I get back on the perch and throw to a few fish, I wasn’t doing to well on my casting, but I was getting after them…I see a double off the grass line….I throw the toad about 18â€

That's what I'm talking about. Awesome report. They love them toads.

I had business in Shalimar and Panama City today and was itching as I crossed the bay. Glad someone was feeding some feathers to them. :-D
