Tough tournament for me and my team (read as, wife and dog). When we arrived at the lighthouse, we were about 6th in line to unload. Finally got in the water and the first stop was quite a run into Oyster Bay looking for the big fish. Well, after taking a brief intermission atop a oyster bar I don't remember seeing previously, we finally made it to the spot. Threw my first lure about 7:45. Didn't manage a single bite at oyster bay, so headed back east, and made it around Shell Point by 9:00. Katie managed to pick up a 17" trout on the flats, then we headed shallow, again in search of the big one. Notta.
Fired back up and headed to the east flats at about 10:15, arrived at about 11:00. Worked some shallow flats for about an hour with little to show. Still only having one trout in the box I decided to head deeper in search of some schoolies that I could weigh in. I'm headed to deeper water at about 15 mphs when I run right over the top of two tarpoon, each about 100#'s. I sat the boat down and began chunking. For the next 20 minutes every cast was mid-slot trout with one being just over 19". Then things slowed back down. However, we had picked up our 8 # limit of trout.
I decided that since my trout cooler wasn't impressive, and didn't seem to be headed in that direction, I would run a couple miles off-shore in search of a cobia. Having intentions the night before of looking for a cobia in the afternoon, I had toted my 9500ss with 100# power pro all day so that I could make quick work of one if I could find it (I saw a couple weeks ago how long it takes to land one on inshore equipment). Upon arriving at the location, another boat was sititing on the number. Foiled. Headed back in and up one last creek in search of the overslot fish that had eluded me all day, but mackeral and lady's were all we could find under the mid day heat.
Ended the day with 60 miles on the GPS, top speed of 27mph (which was brief, just to see what the 40 horse could do, most the day was at about 21 mph). Way too much time running without a big trout to show for it, but a great day on the pond with the family. Everyone came home tired, smelling like fish, and ready for a family nap. Can't wait 'til next time.
Congrats Sea Spot, and nice talking to everyone.

In the end we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. And we will understand only what we are taught.
