The week before Christmas at the mall, I mean St Marks 07-07

Post by T Smith »

Well I haven't been fishing for about a year due to finishing grad school and buying a house, so I went anyways knowing it would be a mad house.
I was first in line when they opened the gate at the lighthouse. Ran up my favorite creek looking for reds, poked around in there for an hour or so with no luck. I then headed out to look for some trout. Caught a keeper on my first cast and then went about three hours before I landed the second keeper.
I caught 8 trout seven on gulp new penny, and three small seabass. Also caught one ladyfish that I split in half for shark bait. Everyone has been mentioning how there seems to be a lot of sharks this year so I figured I'd see if I could find one to play tug-o-war with. So I throw half the lady fish out on a 40# spinning outfit, (that I won at the social year before last) :D .
Drag goes screaming and the line gets cut of course. So now I'm thinking I guess I've got to get serious. I put on a 150# steel leader that I pre-rigged. I put the other half of the lady fish on and let if drift. Sometime later the drag starts screaming, I mean line is really disapearing fast. I've got
two drift socks out the back and a gulp under a cajun thunder out. So I figure by the time I get all those out of the water and get the boat cranked
I'll be out of line. I'm just gonna have to try and turn him somehow. So I tighten down the drag and he just keeps on goin, when about 3/4 of my line is gone the leader breaks. 150# Sevenstrand nylon coated steel leader just like butter. So then I look over and see all those scallopers flippin around. :o I guess everybody knows they're out there but man whatever that thing was it was big!!

Anyways final tally for the day
8 Trout, 2 keepers
3 seabass
1 Ladyfish
1 min tug-o-war match with a shark, (I Lost :smt010 )

Yeah, we saw 5-6 5ft+ sharks at St. Joe swimming not 100yrds from fresh bait (kids) splashing around. I'm gonna be surprised if noone gets bit :o
