Aucilla 7/7/07

Post by caseycook »

Tournament day was a struggle. We launched at the Aucilla while the tide was still rising, ran East, and had lines in the water at 6:30 a.m. Had the first spot to ourselves for exactly 20 minutes. After those 20 minutes were up, the armada followed us in and within two hundred yards, we had 6 boats fishing around us, including two that we could almost cast into. Bummer. Pat and I ended up catching our first and second trout of the day, a blue, and a couple cats on topwater at that spot.

We then made a run West over to around Cow Creek and saw a ton of boats over there. It was almost as if we had a magnet on our boat because one boat idled basically right up beside us. Had no luck at Cow Creek, so we ran over near the Pinhook and fished for a while where Snatch-N-Reel had a monster hit on his jerkbait. We both thought it was a mega-trout or red, but after 15 minutes of fighting and a broken reel, it turned out to be a jack that went 26" to the fork. Of course, the camera's batteries died and so we have no pics.

We then ran back East and fished between the Ecky and the Aucilla in 5' of water and caught a few small trout and cats. By this time it was 12 p.m. and we had three fish in the box.

We ran back over to the mouth of the Aucilla and SNR picked up a 22" black drum (1st one ever) and a couple Jacks. No trout though.

We ran back West over to Cobb Rocks and finally picked up three runt trout that went 16". We had our one person limit, but the day was pretty damn slow. Guess we should've gone to deeper water.

Had a great time at the weigh-in...Got to chat with a bunch of folks and really enjoyed it! Congrats to Welby and Skeeter, JT and TK, and Ty and Chuck...those were some good looking fish. Now if you would, send me your GPS tracks by PM...

SNR, had a great time, sorry I couldn't put you on the fish. Look forward to another trip before the baby gets here...

Final Tally for the day -
6 keeper trout to 19"
1 monster Jack
numerous Cats
1 black drum
Boom goes the dynamite.

I looked for those "places" on Friday...had no luck finding them. We'll just have to go again sometime soon so you can point them out to me. I guess I just suck with directions.

Casey,

I hope Boo didn't scare too many of your fish when he decided I was taking too long to land them. I'm guessing my voice got a little loud as well when I realized it was a 23" trout he was chasing...KIDS...

First time he's tried that and I didn't quite know how to react.

Not very fast; on a slick calm day by myself, 3/4 tank of gas , she'll only do about 58-60. Loaded down she'll run 50-54. Not real fast but fast enough!! I usually never run her more than about 4500 rpm which is my cruisin speed of 42-45 mph. Iguess maybe we should line up a trip and you can ride her and tell me what you think!!!
