Low tide at 6:30, on the water by 6 a.m....too dark to run, so we had to idle out the river. Got to the first fishing spot around 6:20, wind was blowing pretty hard out of the W, lots of floating grass present. Began fishing with topwater, but the floating grass made it frustrating. If you could get a cast in without grabbing grass, you'd most likely get a hit, but only every 20th cast or so would be grass-free. Both my dad and I missed some big strikes at spot 1 on topwater, but the floating grass made us switch baits; me to an 1/8 oz jighead and a 5 inch JS and Pops went for the TS Special. He later went with the jighead, gulp and strike indicator despite my taunts. We continued fishing with these baits in 2-3' of water and caught several nice trout.

Spot 1 became crowded with boats so we decided to explore and just let the boat drift East for a while. The wind was helping as it kept us drifting in the same 2-3' water depth. I switched to a Bite-a-bait twitchbait and hooked some fat upper slot trout. After drifting for a mile or so, we came to an area I'd heard about (but could never find) and it was niiiiiice. First cast through the area and an upper /over slot red takes out a bunch of drag on the twitchbait rod. Get him to the boat when he makes one last run and breaks off the back hooks of the bite-a-bait. Re-tie quickly and hook into another good red...the same thing happens. Finally learn that I needed to loosen the drag and land a nice 25.5" red. Pops also catches a couple good ones.

Our best five trout for the day were 23.5", 2 19", 2 18" and our two best reds were 25.5" and 25". It was a good day on the water with my dad.
