Keaton Beach 9-12-03

Post by CSMarine »

Being on the water again was enough, but the rest of this great fishing trip was "iceing on the cake." My friend Chalk and I left in the afternoon Thursday for Keaton Beach.
Arrived at the Public Ramp at almost dusk Thurs. Ran to the oyster bars north outside Yates creek. Water was dirty, but no floating grass to speak of. Water temp was 82 degrees. Visibility was 2-3 foot. Hunting for reds. Fished untill after dark with one Jack, one 21" trout, and half a dozen shorts. No reds. Chalk caught both. Interesting run back to the ramp after dark. I forgot the light in the truck. :hammer: 8)
Friday morning, arrived at the ramp at daylight. Ran South to the bird racks first. Water temp was 79 degrees. Visibility was 5-6 foot. Some floating grass beds here and there, but no complaints over normal. We had a tough time catching small pinfish, all we could catch were too big for trout bait. Caught a couple 17-18 inch trout with cut bait and topwater. Dead low tide and dead calm winds. Water was slick from 9:30am to mid afternoon. Finally the wind and the incoming tide picked up. We managed eight good keeper trout, with two rock bass, a blue, and about 100 sharks. Including a three foot Bonnet shark.
Threw every thing but the kitchen sink at them. Mostly we caught all the good ones on cut bait, Chalks "secret weapon" and top water. Couldn't fish live bait for the stinking 16 inch sharks. We even caught them on grubs.
Most fun I've had in a long time. Weather forecast was 180 degrees off, thank goodness. Truck ran great. Everything in the Camper worked. The boat ran without a flaw. Fished with one of the best flats fisherman I ever had the pleasure to fish with. Didn't even have to fight the sleep on the 2 and a half hour ride back to Georgia, for good conversation.
What more could a man ask for.
