I have cingular/AT&T and have service all the way to Otower. Verizon would be great except they lock out their BlueTooth for modem connections and force you to get one of their modem cards. BAH!

My wife has had a "trac phone" for about 3 years. I've taken it with me to South Florida during the 04 and 05 Hurricane's...Out on the Flats....Keaton beach and ALWAYS had a signal. It ain't fancy but if the idea is to be able to call some body or have some body call you (novel concept ain't it) then I haven't found a better alternative. :D

I have had Alltell and now have Verizon (last 5 years). Like everyone said, they all suck in some way. But like grim reeler, I have the national plan, and if there is anybody's tower, I can get service.

I also have a Nokia 3589i that can be manually switched to analog. Many times, on the coastline, when I did not get a digital connection, I could switch over to analog, and talk, even though it may be a little scratchy....

That is one reason I am not too anxious to switch to the free new phones I can get.....they are digital ONLY. Plus, I HATE a flip phone. Takes 2 hands to open it up when a call comes in. (Yeah, i know people do it with one hand, but I got big clumsy hands)

I will say that Verizon has taken care of issues I had better than Alltell did. Lets just say I am not too nice when I complain, and Verizon puts up with me better than Alltell did....

I use Nextel, and pay NO ROAMING charges. Mine works in most locations and I can Direct Connect to most of my friends who are also in construction. Just my 2 cents.

I picked up the AT&T / Cingular 8525 a few months ago. No complaints. I dunno about your area but in the St Marks area I get Edge internet and somewhat decent phone service every place we've been in the boat since I got it, up to 5 miles out; we haven't gone further than that since I swapped phones. I'm paying about $90 a month after taxes for the 450 minutes with rollover, nationwide no-roaming, 7pm-7am unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited in-network calling, and unlimited data. That was on par with all the other services around here pricewise but I liked the 8525 device best, and the data protocol is faster (does 3G in metro areas and the Edge network it fails over to when 3G is unavailable is as fast as most carriers' max speed).

I support the data phones for the hospital here & we mostly use Alltel. They just started carrying the new blackberry 8830 which is much smaller than the previous model. I just set up 2 on Friday & the users seem to like them better. One catch is that the blackberry data plan is more expensive per month than regular data. For my personal phone I've been using Cingular/At&t for 7 yrs & wouldn't switch.

I am with AT&T wireless. Have been ever since they were BellSouth Wireless. Good coverage and plan. I received an iPhone as a gift. I added the cheapest data plan and LOVE the iPhone. It's kind of like when your family go their first microwave. How did I ever do without it?
