Yup so it is isn't it - haven't seen it in a while cause I don't drag them up on the boat any more either if I can avoid it. Either way, it doesn't match the boat.
To be honest, I drifted in to known ladyfish territory around the time I started chuckin the spoon, but did'nt recognize it right away cause the water was too choppy to get a good look around the bottom, and my GPS still hasn't made an appearance since Thursday, so it's probably not the spoon's fault. I bought two new ones this morning; one is still in the package, so perhaps I'll give it a go tomorrow.
Mookbait! At least 401 times better than live bait!
Thank you for the great idea! Next Saturday, I'm tying on a Dr. Galt Alie Gold Spoon fly to fish the tournament...who knows, I might even catch a fish!
I have found it much easier to catch Reds with a spoon that has a trailing hook like the Capt Mikes spoon with Treble hook or Johnson Sprite. Just my 2 cents.
I HAVE ALWAYS USED THE 1/4 JOHNSON SOMETIMES IT WORKS VERY WELL, ITS NOT MY FAVORIT RED FISH LURER BUT IT DOES WORK. MY FAVORIT IS THE SPINNER BAIT OR LONG TAIL GULP TEXAS RIGED (VERY LIGHT WEIGHT).
LAST YEAR I GOT TO TALK WITH A FELLOW THAT AT ONE TIME GUIDED, EVERY POLE HE HAD, HAD SOME TYPE OF SPOON TIED ON. HE FISHES FOR TROUT AND REDFISH WITH GOLD SPOONS. HIS COOLER WAS FULL OF IMPRESSIVE FISH. ALL OF HIS TROUT WERE OVER 19" INCLUDING A 24" AND 27" TROUT. HE ONLY HAD ONE REDFISH (25") HE SAID THE OTHER 15 OR SO WERE TO BIG TO KEEP.
MOST OF THESE SPOONS WERE NOT WEEDLES AND VERY LARGE.
HIS FAVORITE WAS A JOHNSON WITH A TREBLE HOOK. THIS THING WAS ALMOST TWICE AS BIG AS THE 3/4 OZ JOHNSON WEEDLES SPOON.
I STILL HAVE NOT FOUND ONE.
Redbelly, try a Johnson's Sprite (gold). It's light and you can cover alot of territory with a cast. Work it one or two feet under the surface depending on the water depth. Cast it upcurrent of those sandbars at St Marks during the tide changes. THINK swiming minnow as you retreive and the fish will knock the daylights out of that spoon.
I bought another spoon today at SGO in Cairo, a Capt Mike's. It is a fixed single hook weedless. I have a Johnson gold spoon w/ treble hook.
I hope to hit the Aucilla tomorrow and catch a big red and a big mama trout on them. I am gonna work the creeks before and up to high tide.
edited to add: According to the wind forecast I think I'll stay and finish the rest of the exterior wood repair to my hizzy. Don't care to fight those winds predicted for tomorrow.
