Knowing when to hold'em and when to fold'em

Post by Barhopr »

That has never been my strong suit in fishing. I never fold and go home. Plan was to get to St. George just at the bottom of the tide, around 10:30 Friday morning. Fish the oyster bars toward Sikes cut then dredge the cut with my 12 wt and luck up on some of the Big reds I've been seeing.
Well, strike one was when 20 min. after I left the house I remember I left the trolling motor at the house.. Had to turn around and go get it. Not real happy with myself but not too big of a deal. Get to East point and the wind is howling out of the Northeast, more so than what the current weather report said, (strike 2) I drive over to the island just to be sure before I go to plan "B" . Sure enough bad, bad, bad. So plan "B"....Stop in Apalach to gas up the truck before heading to indian pass. I left the lights and the radio on as I pump and went in to pay. Come out and click, click ,click....Nothing. Damn it!! ( strike 3) Start to pull the trolling motor batt. out when a local offered to take me down the road to NAPA and get cables to jump me off   . Turned out to be Capt. Tommy Holland who guides for the Robinson Brothers in Apalach. Hell of a nice guy and a big thanks Tommy. Should have turned around and gone home but I had come a long way, so I had to fish. Finally get to the ramp and in the water. It is now 1- 1:30....I'm in the Pass thinking about where to go now that I'm here and like a little devil on my shoulder I get a text message from Chalk...here's the direct quote...."give it up". Damn...Chalks supposed to be my boy, I know he aint telling me to bail. decide on a plan and head East with the plan to ride the wind back to the ramp. The wind is kicking and the water looks like a yoohoo and the north wind has all of the water pushed out and it don't look like it's coming back in. Finally...start fishing...drop the trolling motor...Damn....trolling motors only got two speeds 10% and 100%. ????? Try to fix with a pocket knife and a screw driver... as long as I keep the handle down in the lowest position it works OK. Now it's after 2
Bait everywhere but the water is so muddy I can only see the bottom in about a foot of water or less. I start slinging a black and chart. top dog and hookup with 3 or 4 dink Reds....14-16 inches. finally hit on a keeper right next to the shore by an old waterloged palm tree. he went 24". worked my way West and hooked another on the topdog in 12 feet of water at the end of the pickaline bar. It was nearly 5 or so and called it a day. Went to the Indian pass raw bar for a few suds and oysters and ran into Supafly, his brother Adam and ced...? Nice to meet you guys. Moral of the story...know when to hold'em and know when to fold'em....it's different for different folks....wasn't a banner day but I did not get skunked.

Sounds like my weekend. I left to go fishing Friday night and left my Rods & Reels at home. I borrowed one from Jason and caught some nice Trout. I went back Sunday before the wind picked up, and left my Rods and Reels at the boat ramp when I left Sunday morning. Circle of confusion.

im confused, you got to go fishing on a day trip cause your so close to the salt (im 6 hours away), you got to fish in "your boat" (sold mine so i got to wait til spring), you caught REDFISH ON TOPWATER (well, that is just the crem de la crem to me unless it was snook of course), and you got to spend most of the day on the water (always good) and THEN YOU GOT TO GO TO THE RAW BAR (heaven for food).

so where does the fold em come in? i would hold em all day for that. :-D :D ;-) You just got to put it into perspective man. hahahahhahaha :-D AWESOME TRIP!!!!! and report.

The wind died to nothing about 3:30. If only the water had been clear, I would have stayed till night time with the full moon.
