Just remember at Econfina, the word "channel" is a relative term..... :-D

So true! Obviously whoever placed those markers has never
seen the mouth without water!

low water

Post by volguy »

you are right about the low water. we were there last march on one of our trips and i am headed out "the way i have always gone" which i thought was where the channel was. man the water was low that morning. everything was just about dry, barely making it over the newest sandbar (the first real shallow area you get too headed out right at the beginning of the mouth) that formed after the hurricanes a few years ago. got over this and was heading straight out where i thought the channel was and i see this boat up ahead of us on the far right bank. i am thinking "man what an idiot" cause i had fished up on the right before and just remember how terribly shallow it was on a HIGH tide. all of a sudden boom grrgrrgrrgrr right up on the oyster bar in the middle of that "channel" that i did not know was there. i look up and see these guys still going. never realized there was a deeper chute that went on the back side of that bar almost right on the bank and then cuts back hard to the left straight to the tripod. boy did i feel like an idiot. just when you think you "know it all" the big econ lands the ol humble fist straight down on you.

I've ruined two complete lower units at Econfina in the last 5 years. I grew up fishing there. I too have fell victim to the know-it-all syndrome. In my defense, one of the two incidents was a barely submerged, discarded crab pot chocked full of oysters. :smt013

I too suffer from the "know-it-all syndrome"....prop companies,
marine mechanics and boat repair folks LOVE ME! They all know me so well they start asking about the family before checking damages! :o

And here I though all y'all never hit anything,I can be idling around with the motor tilted and destroy a prop while boats are running around me wide open and never hit anything  Got 237 rock piles marked on my GPS and can slow down in time to hit every one of them.
